The 12 Jyotirlingas

Jyotirlingas are divine places of Lord Shiva where he resides in a different form. The word Jyoti means light and Linga means image, so the word Jyotirlinga means radiant sign of Lord Shiva.

In Shiv Puran, Lord Vishnu or Lord Brahma had an argument about their supremacy. Lord Shiva appeared there and pierced an infinite beam of light in all three worlds. Shiva told them, whoever finds the end of the beam of the light first, will be the Supreme God. Both of them went in opposite directions but could not find the end of the beam.

Lord Vishnu admitted that he could not find the end of the beam, but Lord Brahma lied saying that he did find the end of the pillar. Lord Shiva got furious and cursed Lord Brahma that no one is going to worship Lord Brahma though he created the entire Universe.

In that anger, Lord Shiva infinite pillars of light appeared on the earth in 64 places in the form of Linga Bhava. The 12 major lingas are called Jyotirlingas.
