It is believed that Vishwakarma made this idol of lord Krishna which was later discovered by Madhavacharya, the great devotee of Lord Krishna.
Mother Yashoda, the foster mother of Shri Krishna enjoyed his baal leela of Shri Krishna, but mother Devaki could not. So to honour his mothers wish, Shri Krishna took the form of child and demonstrated all his playful activities. Mother Devaki was overjoyed, Rukmini, Krishna's wife also adored the Baal leela. She requested Krishna to make an idol of Bala Krishna. Vishwakarma made the idol with the holi Saligram stone. The idol was worshipped with sandalpaste and gradually got totally covered with sandal in the course of time. After dwapara yuga, the city Dwaraka was completely washed away by the sea.
Centuries passed, the sandalblock was accidentally found by a sailer as a hard rock, who began using it as a weight to balance the ship. One day, Madhavacharya was doing pooja at Malpe beach. He saw a ship sialing in the sea was in danger, and with his divine powers he saved the ship. The raising storm subsided, the sailer was very grateful to the sage Madhavacharya and requested him to accept something from his ship as a token of gratitude. Madhavacharya accepted the sandalblock. When he broke the block, the idol of balakrishna emerged out of it. His joy knew no bounds when he realised through his vision that the idol he found was the one worshipped by Rukmini. He carried the idol to his Muth at Udipi.
In 16th century, a great devotee of Krishna named Kanakadasa wanted to visit Krishna at Udipi. Because he was of low caste, he was not allowed inside the temple, so he sat at the rear side of the temple and prayed with intense emotion. Overwhelmed with his deviation, Lord Krishna created a hole in the wall towards the West (Madhava charya had placed the idol facing East) so that Kanaka could see and worship the Lord. The hole is known as Kanaka Khitiki.
The idol of Krishna is decorated with gold ornaments and placed in a gold chariot.
