My visit to Mookambika temple, Kollur

Demon Kamhasura got the boon from Lord Shiva that no male can kill him. He started troubling Gods and sages and also disrupted the penance of sage Kola who was performing pooja to Shiva Linga. Sage Kola prayed to Godess Parvati for help. She took the form of Trishool-Nayaki to kill him. The demon Kamhasura came to know that he will be killed by a female Goddess, so he again started praying to Lord Shiva.

When Lord Shiva appeared in front of him to fulfill his desire, Devi Parvati made him dumb (mooka) so that he could not ask for a boon, from then the demon was known as Mookasura. Goddess Parvati with the help of Veerabhadra killed him, the place where Mookasura was killed is now called Marna Katte.

The village Kollur is named after the sage Kola who was shown the Swarnalekha Lingam by none other than Lord Shiva. When the saint asked Lord Shiva how he could worship the lingam without Goddess Parvati; Lord Shiva replied on the left side of the lingam were all teh three manifestations of Goddess Laxmi, Saraswati and Parvati.

Spiritual guru Adi Shankaracharya meditated for Goddess Mookambika at Kodachari hills. When the Goddess appeared before him, he said he wished to have her idol installed in Kerala. The Goddess agrees but sets a condition that she will follow him and he should not look back, Adi Shankaracharya agreed. After reaching Kollur Goddess removes her anklets to test him, Adi Shankaracharya not getting the sound of the anklets turns back, failing to keep his promise. Goddess asked him to install the temple at the same place. Adi Shankaracharya requested the Goddess to forgive him. Thereafter in the morning hours, the Goddess visits Chottanikara temple in Kerala and mid day Kollur.
